International Students Short Story Competition

The Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts (NCLA) is pleased to announce the 2nd International Students Short Story Competition. The competition aims to attract outstanding work which explores the experience of international and EU students living and studying in the UK and to give students an opportunity to assess and translate their experience creatively.

1st Prize: £1000
2nd Prize: £500
3rd prize: £200

Student Loan Company Scams

Hi everyone,
I’ve been hearing about scams from criminals phishing students by claiming to be the Student Loans Company, asking for personal and bank details. Please DO NOT give out any of your details unless it comes directly from SLC.

Here’s an example of a fraudulent e-mail:

“This is a message for all students receiving grants and loans from the Students Loan Company. We have detected fraudulent activites going on with students loan accounts, To allow us update our database fillout your information securely. You can do this by clicking the link below or copy and paste into your browser.…

Elections are approaching once again, this time it is for the Ripple and Sports 2011 to serve the student body for the coming academic year. A Varsity Victory for the University of Leicester!!!

Last night saw Varsity finish with an spectacular win from both Women’s & Men’s Rugby.

Leicester Women’s 29 - 10 DMU
Leicester Men’s 49 - 12 DMU

Congratulations to all the clubs who took part in Varsity.  And a Special Congratulations to all the teams who Won their matches.

Overall, there was 33 varsity fixtures of which Leicester has won 26 of them!

University and Colleges Union (UCU) Strike Action on Tuesday 22nd and Thursday 24th of March

The Higher Education sector is undergoing a number of rapid changes culminating in drastic cuts to teaching budgets in universities, increases in tuition fees, and restructuring of pay and conditions for university staff. All of these measures diminish the quality of higher education and make it harder for students from less privileged backgrounds to go to university. Cuts to our higher education system also impact negatively on university staff; threatening jobs, increasing workload, decreasing salaries, and compromising pension provision.

Bringing the true spirit of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Cadbury’s Spots v Stripes games crew is coming to University of Leicester, Queens Hall on Monday 21st March 2011.
