Richard Burrows The arts and crafts society has been running for one year now and has gone from strength from strength. In essence, we use art as the common interest that we all share to bring together students from varied courses (I myself am a final year medical student). As such, the art themed socials, such as the “food themed fancy dress pub crawl”, form an integral part of our calendar.
Art skill, although valued, is by no means a prerequisite for joining; simply an interest in the arts is required. On this note, art appreciation, such as group attendance of exhibitions held by local artists; trips to the phoenix cinema and trips to art galleries will also feature in our calendar. Furthermore, by getting the group to work on projects using unusual and exciting methods, such as Batik, an ancient wax dying technique, we all start at the same skill level and develop together.
Next year it is our aim to get the group to work on a large project with community/charity involvement, such as mural painting in local schools, so we can produce lasting artwork, which will hopefully enhance the lives of students and the public for many years to come.
However, having stated all this, we aim to keep the direction that the society moves flexible so that what we do is very much influenced by the members and, as thus, hope for many new surprises and discoveries next year.
