Hello and welcome to the University of Leicester Badminton Club website.
We are one of the largest clubs at the university, and we pride ourselves on being a friendly club that offers opportunities to players of all standards, from beginners right though to County and National players. Off court, the club has an amazing social side, with a range of events taking place throughout term time- there’s something going on most weeks.
Badminton Sessions
Every week we have four sessions at the Charles Wilson and Manor Road sports halls at which there will often be a coach for those who want to improve their game, but also there will always be courts free for those who just want a knock- about with mates.
Also, we run a ladder competition, placing every member of the club against each other, challenging to climb up and down the rankings. The ladders are updated each week by the Ladder Secretary, Andrew Nicholds, and more information can be found on the “University of Leicester Badminton Club Ladder” Facebook page.
For the more competitive advanced players, we hold trials at the start of each year to select the squad for our range of teams the BUCS and Local Leicestershire leagues, in which there are opportunities for singles, doubles and mixed play.
Socials/Events
The club has a very active and busy social side. We do all sorts, from events such as meals, lazer quest and bowling, to the slightly messier bar crawls and nights out. Some of the classic nights recently have included Popstars fancy dress and the legendary Freshers T-Shirt Bar Crawl, as well as a formal evening at the University sports awards.
As well as these events, we hold an annual tournament for non- team members at the end of the academic year, which is always well attended and hotly contested. Also, around february we embark on our European tour to a tournament on the continent- in past years this has included Belgium and Holland. This trip is always a highlight of the year, and is a great experience both on and off the court.
Committee
The Club committee are here to ensure the smooth running of the club and that each and every member gets what they want out of the club. We always welcome suggestions from club members for improvements we could make, so if you ever have any questions or want to suggest something, there will always be a committee member at each session, and you can always email or stop us if you see us on campus, and we’ll be happy to chat.
