About Modern Dance

An Introduction to the Modern Dance Committee and Dance Classes

The Committee 2011/2012: Last year saw the Modern Dance Society grow and become more involved in competitions and events, and this year we want to do more so there’s more for all you lovely dancers out there to enjoy! We hope to meet you all soon!

  • Deborah Thomas - Modern Dance Committee President
  • Alice Baxter - Modern Dance Committee Vice President
  • Eloise Levey - Modern Dance Committee Treasurer
  • Hollie Brookes - Modern Dance Committee Secretary
  • Bethany Haller - Modern Dance Committee Social Secretary
  • Laura West - Modern Dance Committee Publicity Officer

The Basics: We hold weekly dance classes in ballet and modern dance with a professional dance teacher. Come along and try us out! Our members vary in the level of past dance experience, but ultimatey, we all love dancing, we all want to have fun, and we’re all very friendly! Joining this society is a great way to unwind from the stresses of university work, whilst meeting with friends and being sociable. Oh, and not to mention the given benefits of exercise on both the body and mind. It is advised that you wear clothes you are comfortable with moving in to all classes.

Please note; occasionally, the location of our dance classes may change to free up room for other people to use space in the SU. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your email account around classes, just in case of any last minute changes or cancellations.

The Competitions:

Only members can volunteer to enter themselves for the Ballet and/or the Modern Dance team. Involvement in competitions is completely voluntary; we understand that everybody has a different work load and want to be involved in the society in different ways! But, they are a lot of fun to be part of, whether you are dancing or coming along as a spectator.

Recent Competitions:

BATTLE OF THE DANCES! We took part in the Battle of the Dances at the University of Leicester SU run by RAG (Nov 2010)! Our society entered a Modern Dance team and a Ballet team. It was FAB night, and all of the dancers really enjoyed themselves. Both teams danced so beautifully, and were awarded some of the highest scores of the night. To top it all off, Modern Dance (choreographed by our President!) won the first heat and got through to the final. In the final, we came second (marginally) to Leicester Street Dance, who also performed excellently. All-in-all, it was a great event, lots of fun, and raised money for a good cause (Children in Need).

Loughborough University Annual Dance Competition! In February 2011, we entered an Intermediate Jazz team and Intermediate Ballet team into Loughborough’s annual dance competition. It was the first time that we went along to the competition and participated, and we were all really looking forward to it! The competition did not disappoint! Overall, thirty three different universities took part, and the standard of the dancing was very high across all categories. We all had a fantastic day, and lots of fun that evening on the social as well! Unfortunately, we did not place in the awards, but we are all glad to just have had the experience, thanks to the hard work done by our president!

DANCE SHOWDOWN! Our first competition of the 2011/12 year. Dance Showdown was similar to Battle of the Dances and took place in the O2 Academy - we had performances of both Ballet and Modern. The modern dance was the highest rated dance by the judges, with us scoring the only 10 in the competition! However, the audience chose Leicester Street Dance as their winners, but it was a great event and everyone really enjoyed it!
