Noah's Ark Bar Crawl

Pair up and dress up as your favourite animal!

10.00 – 02.00

Genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, bioinformatics, neurobiology, bioscience, fish science (?)…

Whatever your gig is, the last month has been the same: you build a cocoon of shit food, paper and text books, spend hours sat on your arse making notes, starrin…g at page after page of text and diagrams willing names of drugs, disorders and enzymes to stay in your brain. Then comes hours of exams; sat in a hall, praying for the unrelenting cramp in your hand to subside enough to write one last essay. Then all you can do is wait for the results…

BUT UNTIL THEN you can find a buddy, dress up like an animal and drink till your eyes pop out (or a non-alcoholic alternative)! It’s time for a break after all that hard work, a chance to relax, so we’re gonna have a bit of a dress-up-knees-up.

The theme is Noah’s ark; you find a friend, pick an animal, dress up like said animal then go out representing your Biblical pair, singing rounds of ‘The animals went out two by two/the students had all blacked out by 2/eihgejjjegvwiuuhyeiunj£$t4uog!!’ (depending upon how much relaxation it is you’ve drunk).

Date, time and route are TBA.

Keep it real.

Sheffield Dance Competition

10.30 – 17.30

Hey everyone,

Hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas break, and aren’t feeling too stressed from revision.

We will be taking part in the University of Sheffield’s Dance Competition. You should all have received an email with details, etc. but just in case, here they are again:

The competition begins at 10.30am so we will be arriving by coach for 9.30am; this means an early start time of about 7.30ish (to be confirmed later). The competition finishes at roughly 5.30pm, then we will be coming back to Leicester (also on the coach). Thus the return time should be about 7.30pm (again – times are estimated at this point). Fourteen Universities are taking part with lots of different dance styles for us to watch and enjoy! Attached is some more information for you to look at.

We have entered a Ballet and Modern dance;

Modern routine
Due to the lack of time we have from now until then we will be doing the same ‘When the sun goes down’ dance. For the people who competed in ‘The Dance Showdown’ please can you let me know if you want to do it, if not I will be looking for replacements. So if you were not in the dance the first time around, please let me know that you’re interested and I can see if a space becomes available!

Ballet routine
We are doing a ballet routine which will be to a beautiful piece of music from the Ghost soundtrack – trust me, it’s stunning! It will be in soft shoes and we are looking for about 8-13 dancers. As this is going to be brand new there will be a fair number of rehearsals; there may be one or two within exam times (as far towards the end as possible – and not if I can avoid it), but these will not take up much time so PLEASE do not let this put you off!!

Cost
The cost of the competition is going to be £10 per dancer; this includes entry into the competition and a complementary t-shirt. We can also take spectators which will be £2.50 each! If you have not already paid a costume hire fee this will be £3 (which lasts for the year) and allows you to wear our hired or owned costumes. The final cost will be transport, which is currently unknown; but we are planning on getting a coach and sharing the cost between all of us! The society will try and subsidise the cost of this as much as possible!

Please email me (on dlt7@le.ac.uk) to let me know if :
A – You are in the modern dance and you want to compete in Sheffield.
B – You are in the modern dance and you do not want to compete in Sheffield.
C - You were not in the modern dance but would be interested in taking a place in the routine if one became available.
D – You want to be in the ballet routine.
E – You don’t want to compete but want to spectate (or you have friends who want to come).
** Please reply ASAP **

*We are also planning on running a social soon after the competition, but we’ll post more details nearer the time*

The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest

When everyone loves Ernest, who is earnestly in love?

Location: O2 Academy 2 (Queen's Hall)

LUTheatre brings you Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy that teaches the importance of being romantic, the importance of being faithful and the importance of being earnest.

All is not as it seems, as these perfect manners and ideal romances are revealed to be a little on the Wilde side. As the number of mistaken identities increase, it will leave hats left askew and tea cups shaken with laughter. In a brilliant exposé of social follies it is made clear that there are a few too few Ernests earnestly courting.

Performances:
8th, 9th and 10th March at 7.30pm

Tickets:
£9 (£6 Concessions, £4 members)

Tickets can be purchased from the Library Bookshop or on the door. You can also email Sarah Johnson at slj26@le.ac.uk to reserve.

'Stand Up and Jump' by James Staynings

'Stand Up and Jump' by James Staynings

"It's about time I started living on the edge…". "Yeah… it's the only place where I feel safe…"

Location: The ARC, Percy Gee Building

Jack is a third year Chemistry student who has everything going for him.
His sister, Ripley, a first year geologist, is ready to quit. Tension is rife amongst the family, as their ‘disowned’ brother, Danny, is returning home for Easter. However, this tension is destroyed in the worst way imaginable.

Only a day before Danny’s scheduled return, the whole family reunites for the first time in eight years when Danny tries to kill himself, their reunion occurring around his unconscious body in a hospital in London.

Questions are asked; why he did it and what became of the boy in the hospital bed? Tragedy looks inward for answers: how you see the world, how you look at yourself.

Performances:
14th, 15th and 16th March, 7.30pm

Tickets:
£7 (£5 Concessions, £4 members)

Tickets can be bought from the Library Bookshop or on the door. You can also email Sarah Johnson at slj26@le.ac.uk to reserve.

Funky Fresh Collective (FFC), an all hip hop dance crew based at Nottingham Trent University will be hosting our annual Major hip hop “only” competition ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ which will host some of the hottest hip hop talent in the University scene as well as representative crews outside University. Our mission is to set a universal dance stage for all “degree” hip hoppers to share and spread their unique university styles with others, and a chance to go move to move with other crews which specialize in the same area of street dance. AND most importantly bragging rights for a year.

After the major success of last year which saw a competition most of the dancers and spectators won’t forget we decided to take it a step further and host this year’s competition at the impressive Albert hall in Nottingham, which has a bigger stage to accommodate a larger amount of dancers and an even larger amount of spectators.
