Referendum

Student vote on the approach that the NUS must take in the higher education funding debate.

Location: Percy Gee

Leicester NUS is holding a referendum to determine the political line they are taking regarding funding for higher education. The choices are free education, keep the tuition fees cap or a call to introduce graduate tax.

Keeping the cap might seem like the safest option however this might be undermined by the fact that Lord Browne has been commissioned to lead an independent review into tuition fees and early indications seem to suggest raising the cap to £7000 a year.

The proposal for a graduate tax is possibly an even more unfair approach than tuition fees. Like any tax, they are subject to increases every year from the Chancellor meaning you could end up paying far more under this system than with tuition fees. Most importantly, both these options charge for a service that we believe should be universally free.

The option for free education is often met with doubt especially in the wake of the recession. We believe however, that there is still more than enough money available to fund this option. Currently, £120billion exists in uncollected tax. Furthermore, corporation tax is being cut despite the fact that these businesses are set to benefit from an educated workforce. Surely they should be paying their share.

Vote against fees and taxation on Thursday and help to build a movement of students demanding a right to free education.
