Dear Society Member,
After reviewing our constitution we have decided to make a number of amendments. This is mainly due to the fact that our current one has not been changed in years and is not fit for purpose on a number of points.
We have taken advice from the Law society and they were kind enough to send us a copy of their constitution which we have used as a template.
The aims of re- writing our constitution were to make the committee more accountable, elections more democratic and the committee more representative of our members.
The main amendments are:
1. Changes to officer positions:
• Academic Officer- This position is being re- named Employer Liaison and holds the responsibilities of the former Vice- President position
• New position of Publicity Officer instead on the second Social Secretary position
• New 1st Year and Postgraduate positions- to make the committee representative of all members
2. Clearer expectations of what the responsibilities of each committee member and the committee as a whole are
3. More comprehensive rules for elections
Sinve Monday the 1st the consultation period began. A copy of the draft version of the proposed constitution is attached to the email sent out on Monday for you to read and make any comments our questions which can must be sent in reply to this email address and then will be discussed at the general meeting next Monday at 1800 in the Ken Edwards LT3.
At this meeting we (the committee) wish to vote in the new constitution once all amendments and queries made by members are rectified.
The general meeting is also a chance for those of you wishing to stand for election to find out more about the different roles of the committee, getting a feel for what we do!
