How to Maximise your Student Union Page:

  • Change your icon to your group’s logo so it stands out
  • Change description so that it is up to date and relevant to this academic year’s society
  • Name your committee and contact email for new group members to contact
  • Post links to all your social media pages
  • Make use of the event ticket link you can make through us, you can see entry to your events through your page on the union website and track people’s rsvp

What Social Media should your Student Group have?

Facebook:

  • We recommend you have a public page discussing your events, team results (if you are a sports group), fundraising campaigns and student group successes
  • You should then have a private page for your committee to communicate with the student group, we recommend (especially for larger student groups), that posts are monitored by committee and that general society members should have their post approved before they make the page – that way, important information cannot be lost
  • Private group pages are also good due to the announcement feature and being able to pin important posts
  • We recommend that socials have events made on your private Facebook page if they are specific to society members only, or involve drinking
  • The public events should involve events such as sports fixtures (including BUCS), performances, events that are open to any students and charity events. This way members of your society and the student union team can share them across social media to build publicity. You can always make your private group joint hosts, in order to invite all your group members so that they receive notifications, but we also recommend core committee members add friends with all society members in order to build report and achieve member sustainability
  • Tag Union Activities (https://www.facebook.com/Leicesterunionactivities/) in anything you like, and please use the ULSU Committee Member Community group to form collaborations, ask advice and promote your events to other societies

Twitter:

  • Use your Student Group logo as your icon so it is easy to identify, with ‘Leicester’ or ‘UoL’ in its handle
  • Make sure description explains who your society is and what you do
  • When you have something you want retweeting, please tag the Union Activities account for us to retweet
  • Our social media hashtag - #HelloLeicester,

Instagram:

  • We recommend you use the same layout for your Instagram logo and description, as you did for your Twitter
  • Please tag the Union Activities account to alert us of what you are doing – we love seeing your achievements!
  • Make use of Instagram stories! It is easy for your followers to look at and with a public account has a wider network outreach
  • Make your stories and posts look appealing – play around with fonts and GIFs, your student group accounts should be fun

Snapchat:

  • Snapchat is becoming an increasingly popular form of social media
  • Group chats can now be made, where student group members can chat and swap photos during events
  • Make your own event snap filters! By adding your own geotag you can make your event publically watched across snapchat by everyone at the event adding to the same public story – this is particularly effective for Sports and Charity student groups

Marketing your events on our website:

  • 360 x 360 pixels pictures in high definition is usually the best image guidelines we recommend to attaching to your event
  • Use eye catching colours
  • People may use the events page on the website to source information, so try and include all the key details, as well as adding the same enthusiasm as you would on a Facebook event
  • Remember you can link tickets to this page by asking us to, making it easier to for meal bookings, kit ordering, deposits, etc
