In 2007, it seemed like Nick Cave was starting to settle into his reputation as one of the elder statesmen of rock-hell, his previous album even painted him as a kind of gospel Tom Jones-figure. So when his garage-rock side project Grinderman seared onto the scene, it took everyone by surprise - was the same man who'd crooned "I don't believe in a non-interventionist god" a few years back seriously now howling "get it on" in that chorus? What was this, some kind of midlife crisis?
Fast forward three years and with the release of Grinderman II, apparently Cave's hairline worries have taken on an even more manic edge. It’s not long into the first track, 'Mickey Mouse And The Goodbye Man', before it’s filled with a wall of sound of overdriven guitars, and even Cave whose voice commands attention like an old firebrand preacher, is struggling to fit in amongst the chaos. It’s messy, loud and frenetic—but it’s downright glorious, and it doesn’t take long to sink your teeth into.
Even so, this isn’t just an album of knuckle-headed rock-outs in the vein of Grinderman I’s 'Get It On'; the more downbeat moments of the album take on a sonically distorted beauty, which make them some of the most revisitable songs on the album. The fantastic 'What I Know' almost sounds like an Exuma song, with the acoustic guitar and fragile vocals fighting against the feedback for dominance.
The familiar complaints of casual misogyny are still on the money, but Cave's lyrics in this album more frequently just break out into all-out misanthropy. The world of Grinderman II is one filled with wolfmen and vampires, where civilisation is only an inch away from becoming a pack of wolves and ‘‘The spinal cord of JFK wrapped in Marilyn Monroe’s negligee’’ is par for the course as a romantic gift. Don't let that suggest to you that this is any kind of dense, emotionally-heavy album. Cave’s talent for wry witticisms is never far away, and the lyrics are filled with typical Bad Seeds lines like ‘'my baby says I’m like the Loch Ness Monster- two great big humps and then I’m gone’’.
Grinderman II is biting, exhilarating, and pulled off with an inimitable swagger. So is this the sound of a midlife crisis? Well, yes, it probably is - but with Cave at the helm, mental breakdown has never sounded so good.
