With clean-cut suits, braces and slicked back hair, Mancunian synth-pop duo Hurts have burst onto the music scene with an impressive amount of critical hype. Their debut album Happiness,released on 6th September under Sony Music marks for many a long overdue return to the New Romantics era, echoing the New Wave sounds of Depeche Mode and New Order. The question is, do they live up to such expectations?
The eleven track offering is certainly quite a surprise. Both singles, 'Wonderful Life' and 'Better Than Love' definitely cater to fans of ‘80s synth-pop electro style, with dramatic, memorable lyrics and equally arty videos full of gothic, Gaga- style dancers alongside the chillingly stationary pair of vocalists. Likewise, 'Silver Lining' and 'Stay' provide listeners with melancholic yet catchy Erasure-esque vocals accompanied by synth lines and orchestral backing. Pop legend Kylie Minogue even features in 'Devotion', adding to the group’s already fast growing fan-base.
Lead vocalist, Theo Hutchcraft, names Gary Barlow as one of his biggest influences, which may come as a surprise to those that have just heard the two single releases. Such an influence seems to have found its way into other tracks, unfortunately failing somewhat in the process, with 'Illuminated' and 'Evelyn' appearing rather weak; lyrically resembling a cheesy boy band effort. What seems to have been so different and refreshing in 'Wonderful Life' and 'Better Than Love' is difficult to find in these tracks, despite the fact that vocally the band remain on form. It is also a shame that a couple of their melancholic ballads fall short of making a lasting impression, in particular the two closing tracks of the album, 'Unspoken' and 'The Water', which feel rather devoid of any real meaning.
However, with this in mind, Hurts do produce some songs, namely their singles, that will hopefully grant them a fair level of deserved chart success. Therefore, their debut album may be an honest attempt to return to, dare I say it, well-produced pop songs rather than a blast from the past. Whatever the verdict, the band clearly have a lot of visible style and aren't afraid to flaunt it. Whether you like it or not, Hurts are here and it looks as if they're here to stay.
