The Safety Bus service is provided by the Students’ Union to take students home on a daily basis throughout term time. The service starts at 18.00 in the winter and spring term and 19.00 in the summer term. There is a ‘pickup’ from outside the SU every half hour and students are taken home safely to their door.

Students are charged £2 per trip home; or alternatively can save money by buying a Safety Bus card. A yearly Safety Bus card costs £99 and a termly one costs £40.

Financial Help & Advice

For all financial advice and support please look on: http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/ssds/welfare/finance

Are you a home (UK or EU) undergraduate student?
      • Are you continuing on the same course in 2010/11?
      • Have you applied for any loans and/or grants that you need for next year yet?
      • If NOT you need to complete the application for the 2010/2011 academic year AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  If your application is late then your funds will almost certainly be late too, which can have serious consequences when you resume you’re your studies (e.g. you will experience problems when trying to register in September if your fee loan is late).
    • The fees for full-time undergraduate courses in Leicester will be £3290 in 2010/11.

Need help?
    • The Student Welfare Service are available to assist any students who are experiencing difficulties or have any general queries with regards to re-applying for 2010/11 funding.
    • There will be an information stand giving basic student funding advice in the foyer.  If you have a specific query come to the Student Welfare Service on the first floor.  Bring with you any relevant documents/reference numbers relating to your application.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT FUNDING APPLICATIONS

UK students who will be studying in the UK:
    • You should have been reminded to apply - probably by text or email.  The form that you need to complete is called the PR1.  If you haven’t already completed it you can do it online or print the form:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/DG_183342

Scroll down to ‘forms for continuing students’ OR login to your student finance account.

If you need your parent(s)/partner to complete a section you should try and ensure they do so ASAP.  Financial assessments of parent/partner income will be based on the 2008/2009 tax year NOT the 2009/2010 tax year therefore they should have the relevant documentation already - either end of year accounts if self-employed or a P60.  Parents on benefits need to complete a ‘confirmation of benefits form’ available for downloading from:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/DG_183342

UK students who will be studying overseas next year:
    • Complete the PR1 form - see UK students above - because if you are dying overseas you remain entitled to the same support as if you were in the UK whether you are an Erasmus student or not. Students from lower income families may also receive an enhanced loan rate and help with travel costs.
    • If you will be undertaking a work placement overseas next year:
    • Complete the PR1 form (see above) but you are likely to only be entitled to a reduced rate loan and no grants/bursaries.
    • Students overseas, whether studying or on a work placement, DO NOT qualify for the University Bursary during their year abroad.  You are also likely to be charged lower fees (or no fees if studying through ERASMUS).
EU students
    • The EU Assessment Team will send you an application form with most sections completed for you - you will have very little to do, just check and sign it.  For most of you the form will be sent to your home address.  Please ask your family to send it to you so that you can return it as soon as possible.  Most of you will only be entitled to the tuition fee loan but if it is delayed you will face problems, including long queues, before you can register in September.
    • If you haven’t received the form you can print it off and complete it in full.  Click on:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/StudentsFromOtherEUCountries/index.htm

The form you need to print is the EUPR1 - please ensure it is the 2010/11 form.
NHS students
    • If you will be entering an NHS-funded year of medicine you can still apply for a basic student loan (non-means tested) but will also be invited to apply to the NHS.  Your Department will advise you about this soon if not already.
All Students:
For individual advice about funding eligibility please email Julie Boggon on jb40@le.ac.uk or Adrian Gascoigne on asg19@le.ac.uk
Care Leavers Support

Are you a student from a Local Authority care background?

The University offers specific support for students entering higher education from a local authority care background, i.e. Care leavers’ and former ‘looked after children’.  Support offered includes a specific bursary of £1000 per year of your course at Leicester (in addition to any other financial support being received), assistance in securing suitable term-time, holiday or 365 day accommodation and advice and guidance tailored to your own specific circumstances. Students entering the University from care backgrounds who have ticked the ‘time in care’ box on the UCAS form will be contacted automatically by the Student Welfare Service with information about the bursary, accommodation etc and a named contact.  You are then totally in control of how much or how little of the provision offered you wish to take up. Free legal advice & Pro Bono Clinic

The concept of pro bono work is a country wide initiative with the intention of providing free and impartial legal advice to those in need. The University of Leicester Pro Bono Group has been successfully providing legal advice free of charge to students and employees of the University for many years. The clinic at University of Leicester is unique as we offer the only legal advice clinic in the country which is completely run by students.

The clinic is committed to providing helpful and accurate advice to our clients and, in reaching this aim, our advisors receive training of the highest standards and only dedicated students are selected for this prestigious role. Although it is ensured that our advisors are competent, all sessions are supervised by legal academics and professors, further enhancing the possibility of solving each of our clients’ problems.

In the event that a client presents a problem which does not fall within one of our areas of competence our advisors will make a referral to a local solicitor specialising in the area of law concerned.

Areas of Advice
The clinic provides legal advice in several areas of law which we believe may prove to be relevant for our potential clients. These areas are;

Employment Law
Debt issues
Landlord and Tenant Law

If you think your problem does not fit under one of these headings you can still come and see us- we may still be able to advice you or refer you to people who can.
The clinic cannot advise on actions against the University of Leicester, including the Student’s Union and the Halls of Residences

Appointments and Opening Hours
The Clinic is open every Wednesday afternoon during term time from 3-5pm.
The clinic has several drop in appointments available each week, however it cannot be guaranteed that an appointment will be available during busy periods. Therefore it may be beneficial to make an appointment to ensure that you will be seen. If you wish to make an appointment please contact the Clinic’s secretary on probono@le.ac.uk

Phone: 0797 183 6794
E-mail: probono@le.ac.uk

If for any reason you cannot attend the appointment slot you have been designated please contact probono@le.ac.uk and we will be happy to rearrange your appointment if required.

It should be noted that sometimes it is not possible to provide a solution to your problem at the initial interview; however a second meeting will be scheduled at a convenient date for you where advice will be issued and explained fully. A letter detailing the advice you received will be sent to you shortly after each meeting to ensure that problems will not be caused due to the information being misunderstood or forgotten.

Student Run Self Help- Eating Disorders

SRSH is a group at the University of Leicester established to provide peer-to-peer, pro-recovery support for students and young people coping with eating disorders, open to anyone over the age of 18. Sessions are strictly confidential and offer extra support during recovery.

Eating disorders are estimated to affect 1-3% of the student population. Life at university can seem demanding; however these feelings can be magnified when a student is also suffering from an eating disorder. Living in an environment far from home can affect a sufferer’s wellbeing, this is where this group can play a significant role to aid students on the road to recovery.

Self help groups do not offer counselling, but instead provide a friendly atmosphere to listen, encourage, and support sufferers, allowing space out of a hectic lifestyle to think about the decisions they are making. Affiliated with B-eat and following the success of past SRSH groups in Oxford University and Nottingham University, SRSH

Leicester promises to provide the same support for its peers too.

The group meets every two weeks, for more information please contact srsh.leicester@gmail.com or www.srsh.com
