Support for Student Parents

 

The University of Leicester Students' Union and University offer a range of support for student parents. The following is a comprehensive list of support services.

 

The parents and carers network: 

The University of Leicester operates the Parents and Carers network, which supports student parents, hosts information workshops, social events, and which meets regularly. If you are interested in joining the network, want to meet other student parents, or have a question, please email Carers_Parents@leicester.ac.uk.

 

 Balancing Studying and Caring:

The University Student Welfare Service can support young parents through a variety of means, such as: 

  • Finding out if you are receiving the maximum support available from Student Finance England and from university scholarships
  • Checking your possible entitlement to state benefits

You can discuss your situation with welfare either through welfare@leicester.ac.uk or by calling  +44 (0)116 223 1185.

The university has a long-standing relationship with Stanhope House Day Nursery, which is situated close to it. Further information on accredited providers in Leicester is available via the Day Nursery Review, which can help you find accredited providers. 

 

Infant Feeding Rooms

The university provides facilities to support students who wish to express milk, as outlined below, which are available to all students.

Room 103, First Floor, Attenborough Seminar Block—swipe card access is required to enter the room; this can be arranged via Estates and Campus Services, Tel: (0116) 252 2319 or email ecs-service@le.ac.uk.

Pod 14, Mezzanine Floor, Charles Wilson Building - A swipe card access is required to enter the room; this can be arranged via Estates and Campus Services, Tel: (0116) 252 2319 or email ecs-service@le.ac.uk.

George Davies Centre, Room 2.42. Entry to the room is available via a swipe card. 

 

Baby Changing Facilities

The university has baby-changing facilities available for all students. Please see the table below, which provides the building and location for the baby changing facilities:

College House - Central Campus, Ground Floor

David Wilson Library - Café, unisex accessible toilet

Charles Wilson - Café, Mezzanine Level, unisex accessible toilet

Danielle Brown Sports Centre - Women's Changing Room

George Davies Centre - Room Z0.19 Ground Floor, unisex accessible toilet

Maurice Shock Building - Café, First Floor, unisex accessible toilet

 

Child Friendly Space

Inside the Percy Gee Building is the site of the Students’ Union's Child Friendly Space, located on the 1st Floor in Room -1.12, which is available for all students, which provides. 

Two workstation desks, for either study or work use.

Two communal couches.

Child play area, with assorted toys.

Child reading area, with assorted books at different reading levels.

Changing facility.

A separate private infant feeding room.
