Part Time Jobs:
We know that not every student can make their way through University on their student loan alone, and that there are often quite a few unexpected costs when making that transition of completing your education and becoming a fully-fledged adult! Fortunately, going to university in a city like Leicester means that there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants always looking for part time workers in customer service that are happy to hire students. It’s worth looking at sites like:
Or even look at your local area and see if there are any “Help Wanted” signs in the window. Just make sure you make it clear from the get-go that you are a full time student. A company is only worth working for if they are considerate with their hours, and allow you to take time off during exam or holiday periods.
One thing that students don’t always realise though is that there are plenty of work opportunities here on campus! Those who are employed as student staff will always have employers who are aware that studies come first, and so we recommend this should be your first port of call when looking for a part time job!
Unitemps:
We are fortunate enough that University of Leicester is part of the Unitemps scheme. It’s very easy to be a part of, you just go online and make an account: https://www.unitemps.com/
Jobs are advertised throughout the year that could be for a day, a week, a month or even a year! You only put an application forward for the jobs that you know you have time for in and around your classes and studies. Just like other job sites, Unitemps lets you create a personal profile and add both your own cover letter and cv that if you like you can change for each job you apply to.
Providing both an hourly rate, and holiday pay, you can apply to jobs advertised in student living, departments on campus, and out in the city. The best part is that Unitemps is a nationwide student job scheme, so if you have a base in your hometown then you can use it to apply for jobs in the holiday periods too.
For more information, feel free to visit the office based on the 1st floor of the Percy Gee Building.
The Students' Union:
There are also plenty of opportunities for Part Time in the Students' Union too! Watch out throughout the year for recruitment on these positions via: https://www.leicesterunion.com/jobs/
Lead Peer Mentors:
This is the next stage up in peer mentoring where you represent your whole department. This is a paid role in which you represent your department on the scheme, help organise other mentors, be a marketer for the scheme especially during recruitment periods and help us organise events for the mentees.
Union Ambassadors:
This is a job with the purpose of what it says on the tin – an ambassador for the Union! You will be helping our marketing team generate interests in events, be a rep on some of our stalls, help with gathering data for union surveys and being a helping hand during Fresher’s and election periods. If you have a passion for the Union, this job is great for you!
Other Union departments also recruit student staff for temporary admin positions throughout the year, so always worth keeping an eye out online for new vacancies.
Student Ambassadors:
They have recruitment twice a year and you can join the team from the moment you start University (they don’t accept applications from final years or postgraduate students though).
Once you are an Ambassador you can apply to a variety of jobs on Open Days, school visits, UCAS representation days, campus tours and much more! You will have a requirement to work at least two shifts a term and can work up to 15 hours a week, and on top of this there is opportunity for training in various areas of work such as working with young school children or public speaking in student life talks.
