In March 2021 we asked you to take part in an all-student referendum, and 1,117 of you voted. Quorum* for the referendum was 1,000 votes. The turnout of 1,117 students equates to 6.7% of the student body.
The question proposed was:
“Do you support a vote of no confidence in the Vice Chancellor and Executive Board of the University of Leicester?”
Students were able to answer ‘Yes’ to agree, ‘No’ to disagree, or to ‘Abstain’ from the referendum.
- ‘Yes’ received 1,010 votes
- ‘No’ received 82 votes
- ‘Abstain’ received 25 votes.
Having achieved quorum*, this means the motion passed. This has become a Union policy.
As a result, the Students’ Union formally supports the position that students do not have confidence in the VC or Executive Board of the University of Leicester. This would not lead to the VC or/and the Executive Board losing their positions. Any such decision would be for the University Governance Structures to decide, this outcome is not binding on the University.
The Students’ Union Executive Committee will work with the ‘Yes’ campaign team to lobby the position of 'no confidence'.
This outcome will be communicated to the University, who will be invited to respond.
We thank all students for actively engaging in this referendum. We are a student-led Union, here for you.
*Quorum is the minimum number of votes required for a vote to become democratic policy of the Union.
