Currently the University offers us no first aid training for anyone in sports. Having proposed the idea to Team Leicester originally, they replied with 'we will struggle to fund this', therefore they shut the idea down straight away. Funding should never come before student welfare. Not now, not ever. So if we can get this through Leicester 100 to make this policy (as it is in many other universities including De Montfort) it will really help to start protecting our players and our teammates as they are the ones who suffer due to our University not providing us with the basic training of First Aid.
The University has a duty of care for its students legally but also ethically. In Sports injuries occur often both big and small, and in some cases hospitalisation is needed. With the long waiting times for Ambulances, first aid training is needed. It can help change the outcome of injuries significantly by knowing exactly what to do. If it is not provided, players are left not knowing what to do.
I urge the Leicester 100 students to pass this to make it policy and ensure no team is left unprepared in a medical emergency. It is time to put student welfare first.
